Forty Days of Praying the Word of God: Day 39

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 1:8

Lord, we need Your Spirit to come upon us today. I pray for a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit over, in, and through Your Church in this generation. I pray we will stop being witnesses to what the world is doing around us, and will instead become Your witnesses, in our own nation and to the ends of the earth. I pray that we will stop talking about what politicians are doing and begin to speak of what You are doing in the earth right now. I pray for those of us who feel powerless, to receive afresh the power of the Holy Spirit to proclaim Your truth.

I pray that as Your Church seeks You in this hour, You will begin to shake the room and fill us afresh with Your Spirit, Lord. And I pray we will then have courage and boldness to proclaim Your name to the nations. That we will speak Your truth, and tell of Your awesome power and Your wonderous deeds. I pray that, under the power of Your Spirit, Your Word will go forth, running swiftly through the streets of our nation, compelling hearts to turn from darkness to light.

Father, I pray for the power of Your Holy Spirit to fill our pulpits and our homes. I pray that every crooked place would be made straight, everything hidden will be brought to light, and that Your Church would walk and talk as those baptized into Your death, and raised up to Your life, holy and clothed in the righteousness of Christ.

Lord Jesus, I am asking that You breath upon Your Church again, filling us with Your Holy Spirit and power. Renew us, refresh us, and fill our cups again. Holy Spirit, teach us, remind us, and point us toward home, toward the throne of our Father.

Empty us of ourselves, and fill us with Yourself.

In the Name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Forty Days of Praying the Word of God: Day 35

“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11

Father, I pray that You will stir up the gifts in Your Body. May we begin to rightly walk in the gifting of Your Holy Spirit, boldly, with humility.

I pray that those who have been given the message of wisdom and of knowledge would submit themselves to You and open their mouths to speak what You have given them.

May those who have the gift of faith, and of healing and miraculous power, step out with boldness. I pray that those with extraordinary faith will begin to encourage Your Church, and raise her faith level. I pray for healing and miracles to come forth through the vessels that carry Your gifts.

I ask that You would purify those who carry prophecy, Lord, that they would speak Your words and not their own. Holy Spirit, prophecy to us, and to the world, through those You have filled with the gift of prophecy.

Pour out discernment, tongues, and interpretation as You will, Lord, for the common good.

Holy Spirit, cause Your people to move as one, built up by the gifts You have distributed. I pray that You will make us as an orchestra Lord, many parts working together as one Body. I come against the schemes of darkness that intend to twist the gifts in the Church, to cause harm and not good with what You have given, in the Name of Jesus.

Cleanse us from anything that gives credit to ourselves for what can only come from You. Cleanse us from our need to be seen and heard and approved of by others. Cleanse us from insecurity that makes Your gifts about us, and not about the Body.

Purify us Lord, cleanse us from pride, or anything else that makes what is holy within us to become unholy through us.

In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Forty Days of Praying the Word of God: Day 21

“And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.”

Acts 4:31

Father, we are in need of a filling – a place shaking filling of Your Holy Spirit. Fill us up, I pray, and send us out to speak Your word, to be light in the dark. I pray that in every corner of the earth, Your Church will begin to fill up with Holy Spirit power!

I pray that You will pour out Your Spirit, stirring dreams and visions and prophecies in Your people. I pray that we will be led by Your Spirit, that we will walk in Your Spirit, and that Your Church will be visible fruit-bearers of Your Spirit, walking in greater and greater measures of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

I pray that our homes, our marriages, our families, our workplaces – in every place and in every relationship – we will bear evidence of Your Spirit within us.

I pray for a fresh move of Your Spirit, a fresh outpouring, to bring both power and conviction to the Body of Christ. May Your Spirit not be quenched in Your people, Lord, but may we instead match the very rhythm of our steps to the steps of the Spirit of God. I pray that we will once again walk in the healing, delivering, power of Your Spirit – healing the sick, breaking off oppression, lifting the downcast, setting captives free. Rid us of our programs designed to entertain. Strip us of our need for the attention and approval of men. Reduce us again to be lovers and followers of Jesus who pray for the boldness to do what You call us to do. May we be emptied of wise and persuasive words, and filled with the power of Your Spirit.

Father, I pray that You will begin to move through our congregations with the power of Your Spirit, cleansing us of what makes us lethargic and lukewarm, and breathing on the flame within us so that a passion for Your truth and Your ways will burn in us again. May we abandon all that is not of You, everything we have invented to make us feel religious, everything that pacifies our flesh while quenching Your Spirit. Come like fire, and burn the hay and stubble of fruitless works, works done by us and for us. Wake us from our slumber, Lord, by the shaking of Your Holy Spirit.

Empty us of us, and fill us with You, Lord God.

In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17; John 6:63; 1 Thessalonians 5:19; Acts 13:52; Galatians 5:22-23; Galatians 5:25; 1 Corinthians 3:12-15; 1 Corinthians 2:4

Forty Days of Praying the Word of God: Day 11

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.”

Romans 8:14-15

“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

Galatians 5:24-25

God I pray that we will, now more than ever, follow the leading of Your Spirit. I pray that the spirit that is leading the culture around us will not lead our thoughts, our opinions, our actions, or our words. I pray that Your people will know and follow the Holy Spirit in increasing measures.

I pray we will not fear what the world fears. I pray that You will release Your people from slavery to fear, allowing them to walk and live confidently as the children of God, led by the Spirit of God. Teach us afresh Lord, what it looks like to be crucified with You, to die to our own flesh in order to live by Your Spirit. Holy Spirit of God, I pray that we will keep in step with You, not ahead of You, not making our own way, but following Your lead in all things.

We belong to You, Father, and You call us Your children. I pray that our hearts will receive the sonship and daughtership that You have given to us, I pray that every wound that keeps us distant from the Father heart of our God will be healed in the Name of Jesus, and that we will walk in new life and new freedom as the children of the Most High God.

Thank You Lord, for taking us as Your own, bringing us into Your family, and giving us Your Holy Spirit as our advocate, our comforter, our teacher, and the One who will continue to remind us of Jesus, His Word and His ways. I ask for a fresh baptism in Your Spirit, a fresh out-pouring, fresh power, and a fresh revelation for Your Church. Come, Holy Spirit, and rest on us, bring forth new life in us.

In the Name of Jesus, amen.

missing joy full

All it takes is a few words. Just a few, skimmed over and paid little attention. And then one day, those few words come off the page dressed in neon lights, making my head tilt sideways.

Open-Bible-500x215“The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”  He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.  However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.’

At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.” – Luke 10:17-21

Today I saw words I had been missing,

The seventy-two returned with joy”

and something in me ached. It ached because I realized that I can’t remember the last time I had returned with joy from discovering His power in ministry. And I think it ached because I hadn’t realized that I missed it, this joy.

“Jesus, full of joy…”

He wasn’t disappointed in them because they missed the point. Instead, He traded stories with them. They saw demons submit to them, He saw Satan fall from heaven.

They didn’t return all excited only to get a rebuke. He didn’t burst their bubble of excitement, but He did remind them that there was something far better than demons in submission, something really worth celebrating. Don’t settle for rejoicing over demons. Not when your name is in the book of life.

He wasn’t against them, shaking His head because they had it all wrong. He was

Full. Of. Joy.

Somehow, I missed that.

It doesn’t really matter to me right now why He was joy full. Just the picture of Jesus, smiling, laughing (because people full of joy do those things) with His disciples…that picture makes my heart happy. Joy full, even. And I’ve missed that.

Here is what I didn’t miss. Not today…

“…through the Holy Spirit…”

I won’t get joy full by trying harder. It can’t be worked up, or manufactured.

Joy won’t come from things, from circumstances, or from other people.

In my search to know more of the Holy Spirit, I am taking note…

He brings

Joy

Holy Spirit, who are You?

In my quest to go deeper, to know the heart of God more, it was inevitable that I would find my way here. Because after almost 24 years of relationship, I still find the Holy Spirit to be a mystery. I’ve been taught much, heard much, and have even sensed His presence many times, and I still feel as though I need to stick out my hand, introduce myself and ask Him that question.

Just who are You, really?

I am filled with the urge to search, and I know of only one place to search for God; only one place that I know for sure He will be found.  And I remember that “In the beginning“, the Spirit of God was there, so that is where I turn. And I find the first glimpse of the Holy Spirit.

“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep,and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” {Genesis 1:2}

Hovering. Rachaph is the Hebrew word. It means to brood, like a mother bird broods over her young.

It also means “to cherish”.

The exact same word is used in Deuteronomy 32:11, describing God’s care for Israel ~

“like an eagle that stirs up its nest
    and hovers over its young,
that spreads its wings to catch them
and carries them on its pinions.”

He cherishes.

And I am reminded ~

“And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.” {Romans 5:5}

I sat back and closed my bible, closed my notebook and put down my pen. And then I chose to believe what I had found.

The Holy Spirit of God is not just a vaporous mystery. He’s not just power and strength, worker of signs and wonders, and Giver of gifts.

Suddenly the fact that I am indwelt by the Holy Spirit looks different to me.

“In the beginning…”  became “Here is the first thing I want to tell you about Myself. You are cherished by Me.”

Holy Spirit of God…

It’s so nice to meet You.
